Fired from your job? Don't know what to say in an interview? Career expert and author, Joyce Lain Kennedy, shares her twelve best job interview answers to the question "Why were you fired?"
Joyce Lain Kennedy is the nation's first syndicated careers columnist. Her work is distributed by Tribune Media Services and appears in more than 100 newspapers and Web sites. In addition, Joyce is author of eight career-related books including Job Interviews for Dummies, where you can read additional excellent interview advice, Cover Letters for Dummies and Resumes for Dummies.
Joyce Lain Kennedy's sample answers to the interview question "Why were you fired?"
Being cut loose was a blessing in disguise. Now I have an opportunity to explore jobs that better suit my qualifications and interests. My research suggests that such an opportunity may be the one on your table. Would you like to hear more about my skills in working with new technology?
My competencies were not the right match for my previous employer's needs but it looks like they'd be a good fit in your organization. In addition to marketing and advertising, would skills in promotion be valued here?
Although circumstances caused me to leave my first job, I was very successful in school and got along well with both students and faculty. Perhaps I didn't fully understand my boss's expectations or why he released me so quickly before I had a chance to prove myself.
The job wasn't working out so my boss and I agreed that it was time for me to move on to a position that would show a better return for both of us. So here I am, ready to work.
After thinking about why I left, I realize I should have done some things differently. That job was a learning experience and I think I'm wiser now. I'd like the chance to prove that to you.
A new manager came in and cleaned house in order to bring in members of his old team. That was his right but it cleared my head to envision better opportunities elsewhere.
Certain personal problems, which I now have solved, unfortunately upset my work life. These problems no longer exist and I'm up and running strong to exceed expectations in my new job.
I wanted my career to move in a different direction, and I guess my mental separation set up the conditions that led to my departure. But by contrast, the opportunity we're discussing seems to be made for me and I hope to eventually grow into a position of responsibility.
I usually hit it off very well with my bosses, but this case was the exception that proved my rule of good relationships. We just didn't get on well. I'm not sure why.
My job was offshored to India. That's too bad because people familiar with my work say it is superior and fairly priced.
I outlasted several downsizings but the last one included me. Sign of the times, I guess.
I was desperate for work and took the wrong job without looking around the corner. I won't make that mistake again. I'd prefer an environment that is congenial, structured and team-oriented, where my best talents can shine and make a substantial contribution.
Kennedy also says, "Practice in advance what you'll say. Then keep it brief, keep it honest and keep it moving." That way, you'll get past the sticky issue of getting fired and can move on to your skills and why you're qualified for the job.

Job Interview Tips HR Interview Interview Questions Resume Preparation Interview Skills
One of the questions that is typically asked in an interview is "Why are you leaving your job?" or "Why did you leave your job?" if you have already moved on. If you were fired from your job, use these answers to respond. If you left of your own accord, review these suggestions on how best to answer and tailor your response to meet your particular situation. Be direct and focus your interview answer on the future, especially if your leaving wasn't under the best of circumstances.
Don't Badmouth Your Boss
Regardless of why you left, don't speak badly about your previous employer. The interviewer may wonder if you will be bad-mouthing his company next time you're looking for work. I once interviewed a person who told me that her last employer was terrible. They didn't pay her enough, the hours were awful and she hated the job. That company happened to be my company's biggest, and most important, customer. And there is no way I would have hired someone who felt that way, justified or not, about our valuable client. So, she gave up any opportunity of getting the job as soon as she answered the "Why did you leave?" question.
Prepare answers to typical job interview questions, like this one, in advance. Practice your responses so you sound positive, and clear, about your circumstances and your goals for the future.
Sample answers to the interview question "Why did you leave your job?
I found myself bored with the work and looking for more challenges. I am an excellent employee and I didn't want my unhappiness to have any impact on the job I was doing for my employer.
There isn't room for growth with my current employer and I'm ready to move on to a new challenge.
I'm looking for a bigger challenge and to grow my career and I couldn't job hunt part time while working. It didn't seem ethical to use my former employer's time.
I was laid-off from my last position when our department was eliminated due to corporate restructuring.
I'm relocating to this area due to family circumstances and left my previous position in order to make the move.
I've decided that is not the direction I want to go in my career and my current employer has no opportunities in the direction I'd like to head.
After several years in my last position, I'm looking for an company where I can contribute and grow in a team-oriented environment.
I am interested in a new challenge and an opportunity to use my technical skills and experience in a different capacity than I have in the past.
I recently received my degree and I want to utilize my educational background in my next position.
I am interested in a job with more responsibility, and I am very ready for a new challenge.
I left my last position in order to spend more time with my family. Circumstances have changed and I'm more than ready for full-time employment again.
I am seeking a position with a stable company with room for growth and opportunity for advancement.
I was commuting to the city and spending a significant amount of time each day on travel. I would prefer to be closer to home.
To be honest, I wasn't considering a move, but, I saw this job posting and was intrigued by the position and the company. It sounds like an exciting opportunity and an ideal match with my qualifications.
This position seemed like an excellent match for my skills and experience and I am not able to fully utilize them in my present job.
The company was cutting back and, unfortunately, my job was one of those eliminated.

Create a Mobile Device WebsiteMarch 17th, 2008
Mobile Devices like the BlackBerry and Pocket PC are becoming ever more popular. People are moving away from the office so that they can become more productive.
As this trend continues it becomes even more popular for the webmaster or business to have a website that is friendly to a mobile device.
It’s best to retain those web users and maybe even gain a few new one in the process. Website’s specifically engineered for mobile devices do just that. Why can’t mobile devices use the same website as pc’s and mac’s?
Well the main reason is that the pages are way to large. Most websites are made to be viewed at a 1024×768 resolution or at least 800×600. Well the BlackBerry 8730e has a resolution of 320×240. It’s the equivalent of looking at a map through a pinhole.
So what needs to be done? We need to lower the resolution of the web page. Because we can’t expect 90% of your users that are on PC’s to look at a tiny website on their screen we need to create a duplicate site.
If you are running your site on an apache web server chances are that it has cpanel and in cpanel there is a create subdomain icon/text.
Creating Subdomain on IIS Server is a little more tricky that on Apache. First you must create a folder in the inetpub called mobile. Then you need to add new website by right clicking My Computer going to Manage and then Services and Then IIS then Web Sites. Create a new website naming it Mobile Site, then make sure that the properly / Home Directory Tab is showing the contents of the mobile folder. Then go to the control panel and select network devices and right click your network connection and go to properties. Then click the advanced button and make sure the tab is on IP Settings. Add an IP address (a new one not the same one as your other site) and then save all that.
Now you need to NAT the incoming request for mail.yoursite.com to that internal ip address. I may have skipped a step or two but i thing i have all that covered. If you have questions just google “Subdomain Setup IIS Tutorial”
Now back to what we where talking about earlier, making a few pages specifically for the mobile device browsers You need to create at least 4 different pages
* Email Directory* Phone Directory* Location* About
If your organization is not that large you can probably compress Email / Phone directory into 1 contact page.
These pages need to be minimal. Minimal text, minimal tables, minimal pictures ect. Also NO FRAMES, NO JAVASCRIPT, and NO FLASH as most mobile device browsers can’t read any of those.
Assuming that everything has wen ‘t well you should have a mobile friendly website that can be viewed by any user anywhere. Make sure to post a link on your main page linking to the Mobile Page, and give it out to your customers as well.

Mobile devices are the future of the InternetJanuary 10th, 2008
How would your website look on a hand held device? Is it easy to navigate? Is the most important information readily available to your visitors? Is your website “mobile Web” ready?
Ten years ago most small business owners didn’t have a website and probably didn’t see the need for one. Now, a business without a website is considered second rate at best. A website is a necessity for doing business in the 21st century. Also a necessity in the 21st century is a website that can be easily viewed on a hand held device.
According to the latest statistics, only 11% of Americans are getting their news and information using the browser in their mobile phone. That doesn’t seem too impressive until you look at the enormous popularity of Apple’s new iPhone and realize that “the times, they are a changing.” In the next few years, the popularity of surfing the net on your mobile Web is going to skyrocket.
Mobile devices are the future of the Internet. According to a November 27, 2007 article in the New York Times, “More than 30 companies have signed up for the Open Handset Alliance from Google, which aims to bring the wide-open development environment of the Internet to mobile devices.” If Google is getting involved in this effort to broaden the use of the Internet on hand held devices, you can be sure that this is not just a passing trend.
The incredible popularity of the iPhone is leading the way to a new website platform for businesses. As the Web technologies for mobile devices continue to improve, more and more people are going to be using their iPhone or Blackberry to connect to the Internet. However, even though the improved Internet navigation capabilities of the iPhone make it easier for users to connect to the Internet, there is still one big problem with mobile devices. Small screens make for difficult viewing.

Build a Mobile Web Site without ProgrammingJanuary 3rd, 2008
There are mandatory rules mentioned all across the web that you cannot just ignore if you intend to make mobile pages that will make its way to 1.6 Billion mobile phone screens around the world today. These rules once followed, are suppose to benefit page owners and page users alike or give everybody a good mobile existence and experience.
If you read about and aware yourself of these rules, you will most likely realize that it is actually simpler to just forget everything about mobile pages and start ignoring the buzz about WAP or dotMobi than to start complying with them. But if you believe with other big and small businesses, pay-per-clicks and big brands that the future traffic lies on mobile internet, you have no choice but to learn the rules that are enumerated below and quoted from a blogpage on dotMobi.
1. XHTML tags for your mobile profile
- You ought to have a tag for your mobile landing page to signify the XHTML nature of your site. XHTML is the preferred language for mobile web browsers (just in case you did not know) and this language gives mobile browsers the signal as to what kind of behavior your site wants the consumer to experience. Mobile sites not implementing this rule will be turned off with due notice.
2. Strictly No Frames
- Frames in some cases, screw up or break mobile browsers and produces a bad mobile experience for the users. They also make navigation around a mobile site more difficult for users. Mobile sites not implementing this rule will be turned off with due notice.
3. myname.mobi should be the landing page
- This rule exists for the practical reason that consumers on the go do not have much chance to remember lengthy addresses or even type lots of characters on a zero to nine keypad. A dotMobi page is supposed to guarantee that users need not worry about what comes before the name (www.something Or wap.something) and feed the requested mobile pages quickly and dependably. Mobile sites not implementing this rule will be turned off with due notice.
Now that you already know the rules, you already might be looking for ways to build mobile pages that are automatically compliant with these rules.
Making a mobile site has to be brain-dead simple nowadays for there already exist platforms that actually allow you to build your own mobile pages even when you don’t really know anything about XHTML.

What is RSS?

RSS - Really Simple Syndication - What is it and How Do You Use It?

What Is an RSS Feed

Zen Cart RSS

PHP RSS Script
If you frequent Weblogs, you've seen the little XML icons inviting you to "syndicate this site", but what does that really mean? A long time ago, newspaper managers realized that if they could use articles and stories from other newspapers in their paper, they could garner more readers because they could cover a wider area than they could with just their own reporters. This is an example of how syndication can work in print.

Online, there are potentially millions of authors writing about millions of topics each day. It can be very difficult to keep track of without some type of automated system. And that's where RSS comes in. Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an easy way for Web sites to share headlines and stories from other sites. Web surfers can use sophisticated news readers to surf these headlines using RSS aggregators.

A Brief History of RSS
RSS was first invented by Netscape, when they were trying to get into the portal business. They wanted an XML format (RSS .90) that would be easy for them to get news stories and information from other sites and have them automatically added to their site. They then came out with RSS .91 and dropped it when they decided to get out of the portal business.

UserLand Software picked up RSS .91 and continued to develop it, coming out with .92, .93, and .94. At the same time as UserLand, a non-commercial group picked up RSS and developed RSS 1.0 based on their interpretation of the original principles of RSS. They based RSS 1.0 on RDF and re-named it RDF Site Summary. UserLand was not happy with RSS 1.0, and continued development of their version of RSS (Really Simple Syndication), eventually releasing RSS 2.0.

Which Version of RSS To Use
and Does It Matter?
For the purposes of this article, no it doesn't. If you were going to build your own aggregator or a program to read RSS feeds, you would care, but that's not the point of this article.

Here are the basics of RSS (no matter what the version) (view sample RSS - right click or click and hold to open in a new window):

It is XML. This means it must be well-formed, include a prolog and DTD, and all elements must be closed.
The first element in the document is the element. This includes a mandatory version attribute.
The next element is the element. This is the main container for all RSS data.
